2003 - 2004 Archives

28 September 2003 to 08 October 2004
Jewish Year 5764

Dear Torah Student: Some weeks you may not be able to complete the Torah portion of the week. Nevertheless, find time to share an insight with your Torah partner on what you have been able to read. We always look for spiritual progress, not spiritual perfection, in our Torah study. The LORD blesses even our smallest efforts.

The first column is the date on which the Torah portion is read. The second is the name of the Parashah, taken from the first words of the Parashah (portion) in Hebrew. The next two columns are the Parashah and the Haftarah. The latter is usually a reading from the Prophets and adds a reflection on the Parashah.

And then, on 09 October 2004, the cycle begins again with
Parashat Bereshit, Genesis 1:1-6:8, and the haftarah, Isaiah 42:5-43:11.

And so the cycle of Torah readings continues, year after year, in (almost) every synagogue in the world (some synagogues use a three-year cycle). There are also times when there are modifications to the schedule, particularly to the haftarah readings, depending on whether one is following a schedule from an Ashkenazi or a Sephardic synagogue. The haftarah readings in this schedule follow the Ashkenazi readings list. Sometimes English translations vary slightly in numbering for chapters and verses.
